After losing the family fortune in the stock market crash of 1929, young New York aristocrat Eric Hughes finds work as a laborer in the newly-formed Civilian Conservation Corps—a government program created to preserve the nation's natural resources. He soon finds himself toiling in the vast wilderness, struggling to find his place as he makes new friends and encounters new enemies. He also meets Rebecca, an independent young lady living in a nearby lake house, whose father is a wealthy and influential U.S. senator with an eye for business opportunities. As their relationship blossoms, Eric must choose between the love of a woman, the honor of the C.C.C., or the chance to regain his lost wealth.
